Since 1998, Recreation Nova Scotia (RNS) has been serving Nova Scotians by advocating for recreation and leisure opportunities, and the associated personal, social, economic, and environmental benefits. In late 2020, RNS undertook a strategic planning process to clearly define the renewed purpose of the organization and establish realistic goals and objectives with a newly defined focus on equity. Four key priority outcomes emerged and are outlined in the document below, along with the key strategies RNS will use to achieve those outcomes and the performance measures they will use to track progress toward the outcomes.

In January 2023, RNS invited five retired professionals, all former Board members and Executive Directors, to meet with the Board to discuss aspects of the association's past work dating back to its formation in 1998. After that meeting, Debby Smith and Brenda Robertson volunteered to record some of the 50-year history for the Board to use in making decisions about what the association is currently being called to do. This document represents fulfilling that commitment, covering roughly 1973 until the beginning of Covid 19.
