June is Recreation Month

In Nova Scotia, June is proclaimed Recreation Month to recognize and celebrate the contributions recreation makes to the quality of life in Nova Scotia.

"Whatever recreation means to you, the important thing is that you make it mean something. Get out and have some fun and make the most of the time that's yours, says Brenda Robertson, President of Recreation Nova Scotia. " June is Recreation Month provides an excellent opportunity to draw public attention to the important and varied benefits of recreation to individuals, families, neighborhoods, communities and the province as a whole."

This year's theme is Recreation: LIVE IT EVERYDAY! Regardless of ability or age, Nova Scotians are enjoying recreation in an increasing number of ways, and this year's theme recognizes that recreation activities do not have one definition. "Activities of all kinds, not just physical, is acknowledged and celebrated. Involvement in recreational activities leads to a healthy lifestyle and contributes to a healthy Nova Scotia. Whether it be lawn bowling, running marathons, photography, taking a walk in a park, reading a book, learning a new instrument, playing soccer or star gazing - recreation is about celebrating life, everyday," says Trudy Payne, Executive Director, Recreation Nova Scotia.

Hundreds of June is Recreation Month activities and celebrations will be taking place in communities, libraries and schools across Nova Scotia. Provincially, RNS has produced a tool kit and web site for community leaders to have access to June is Recreation Month campaign and recreation programming ideas, and resources including sipper pulls, bucket hats, frizbees, posters, screen savers and much more. This years campaign includes a Supporters program, photo contest, reading campaign, creative expressions campaign, and a calendar of events. For a listing of events taking place visit www.recreationns.ns.ca. If you are organizing an event or know of an event taking place in your community and it is not listed on the Recreation Nova Scotia calendar of events web site, please let RNS know about it. An event can be submitted on the RNS web site and forwarded by fax to 902-422-8201.
