The National Skills Program

The National Skills program available through Recreation Nova Scotia is a complete workshop series supported with useful resources and training materials - all written especilally for volunteers, staff, trainers and leaders of the Voluntary Sector. Recreation Nova Scotia will organize workshops for groups of eight (8) and more. Each workshop is 3 hours in length. The workshop is $150.00, plus $14.00 per manual/ per participant for RNS members, and $18.00 per manual/per participant for non RNS members. Topics include:

Introduction To Strategic Planning Workshop

A strategic plan is a critical component to the success of any group or organization and yet many groups have found significant challenges to developing a successful plan. Recreation Nova Scotia is pleased to be able to offer this strategic planning workshop in partnership with the Chauvin Resource Development Group. Through this training participants will learn the basic steps to developing a strategic plan as well as how to ensure that the plan is practical to use in their organization's ongoing business operation. Each participant will receive a 30 page workbook including sample forms for each step of the process as well as a sample planning schedule. Course length: 10 hours Cost: RNS Members:$115.00 RNS Non-Members: $150.00

Engaging Your Members

Organizations are currently facing new challenges in working with their membership. Members wish to be more involved in the decision making of their organization and they with to know more about the inner workings of its management and governance structures. In this age of increased need for transparency and demand for stronger accountability organizations are looking for new and innovative ways to engage their members in discussions, policy development and issue resolution. Engaging Your Members will provide participants with the approaches, tools and resources so that they will be able to structure and host their own Facilitated Discussion Session with volunteers, members, and/or stakeholders. We will also explore various methods of input and data collection and provide participants with a basic overview of facilitation concepts and resources. Course length: 2 1/2 hours Cost: $35 (RNS members receive a 15% discount)

Effective Organizations

The Effective Organizations workshop and manual focuses on improving the ability of organizations to fulfill their mission and goals. This workshop is designed for the Executive Director, Coordinators and Board members of non profit organizations, Recreation Directors, and Consultants who works with an organization to tackle a particular issue or problem. Topics included: Strategic planning and framework policies such as Mission and Vision statements, effective meetings, resource management, communication, team building, priority setting and decision making. Each participant will complete a detailed review of their organization that will highlight the specific needs within their organization. The manual provided with the course is filled with detailed reproducible worksheets and handouts that you can then use in working with your own group after completing the course. Course length: 7 1/2 hours Cost: $120 (RNS members receive a 15% discount (fee includes E.O manual) Students Cost $90.00 (RNS members receive a 15% discount)

Volunteer Management Trainer Workshop

Become a Volunteer Management Trainer with the National Skills Builders Program. You will learn practical ways to facilitate and lead volunteer management workshops for volunteers and community groups. A listing of the modules: Time Management, Marketing, Developing an Organization, Volunteers Working Together, Planning, Effective Meetings, orientation of Volunteers, Financial Management, Recruiting Volunteers and Staff, Organizing for Results, Managing Volunteers and Staff, Working with Volunteers, Leadership, Fundraising for Results. Pre requisite: Experience as a facilitator and trainer, volunteer management experience Course length: 11 hours Cost: $ 185.00 plus HST (RNS members receive a 15% discount) Cost: $120 plus HST for students Next workshop: TBD

Moving to Inclusion Workshop

The Moving to Inclusion Workshop provides recreation professionals and educators with practical tips, strategies and ideas to include ALL individuals in community recreation programs and the school system. MTI provides modifications to physical activities in such areas as assessment, equipment and rules, instructional strategies and learning objectives; it provides your community and school with a resource person to assist other professionals; it Increases your ability to facilitate an increased quality of life for individuals with a disability by assisting them to be more active and fit in with their peer groups; it raises awareness of participants' abilities, instead of focusing on their disabilities. Course length: 3 hours Cost: $25.00 for RNS Members, $35.00 for Non-Members, $10.00 for Full Time Students

HIGH FIVE Quality Assurance Initiative

Recreation Nova Scotia also offers additional training opportunities for frontline leaders and coaches, supervisors, administrators and volunteers through the HIGH FIVE Quality Assurance Initiative.
  • The Principles of Healthy Child Development, designed for people working directly with children, focuses on applying five principles of healthy child development in program planning.
  • Using the HIGH FIVE Quest teaches supervisor, volunteers and board members how to evaluate recreation and sport programs, using the HIGH FIVE Quality Experience Scanning Tools

Move More Leaders Training

HeartSmart Move More Leaders Training: This orientation workshop, developed for recreation and physical activity providers, will:
  • Introduce participant to the purpose and background of the HeartSmart Move More program
  • Provide an overview each workshop session of the program; including:
    • Introducing Physical Activity in Your Life
    • Breaking Down the Barriers to Physical Activity
    • Activity Myths
    • Motivation and More
    • Stress
    • Activity and Good Health
    • Self Esteem
    • Discovering Community Physical Activity Opportunities
  • Identify concrete ways of using the workshop sessions in your own organization's programming.

Back to Nature Staff Training

(May 2010- September 2010)

Recreation Nova Scotia is offering a discounted staff/volunteer training opportunity to assist its members in delivering nature and environmental education programming.

A limited number of half- or full-day workshops are available at half-price, delivered by Sense of Wonder Environmental Education.

Workshops include:
  • Learning how to design an engaging nature day camp (selecting a theme, choosing activities, logistics, etc.): Half-day workshop hosting fee of $200.00
  • Learning activities and techniques to use directly with children and youth in a day camp setting: Full-day workshop hosting fee of $375.00

Workshop content will touch on aspects of nature appreciation, how nature works and lessening our impact nature (including protecting species at risk, preserving natural areas and environmentally-friendly behaviours). Each workshop participant will receive a resource kit.

Workshops will be facilitated by Janet Barlow. She has created and delivered environmental education programs for 15 years. She is a former camp counsellor, co-author of two trail activity books, instructor of NSOLD’s Environmental Interpretation module and runs Sense of Wonder Environmental Education. She is also the Sharing Nature™ Canada Coordinator.

Organizations or municipalities must apply to be a workshop host by May 10, 2010. Workshops may be scheduled between May and September. Workshop hosts will be chosen where possible from all across Nova Scotia and on a first come, first served basis. We encourage organizations and/or municipalities in each region to partner in hosting workshops.

The workshop host is responsible for workshop logistics and associated costs, such as:

  • Arranging a venue (an indoor space as well as nearby park or green space)
  • AV equipment
  • Refreshments and/or meals (if required)
  • Workshop promotion
  • Participant registration (ten to 20 participants per workshop)
