Recreation Nova Scotia invites you to honor Nova Scotia's best. The Recreation Nova Scotia awards were initiated to pay tribute to those exceptional individuals, organizations, facilities and communities who, through their efforts and skills, made outstanding contributions towards the betterment of the recreation movement in Nova Scotia. The awards are:
- made a substantial effort to achieve universal barrier-free design, and;
- demonstrated evidence of the inclusion of universal barrier-free features in facility design.
Bluenose Achievement Award
Presented to volunteers or community organizations to recognize outstanding achievements in the improvement of recreation/leisure opportunities locally, regionally or provincially. The nominee should reflect the communities healthier future through activities and services that promote the value and benefits of recreation.
Mayflower Community Cooperation Award
Presented to communities and municipalities that have shown outstanding cooperation for the improvement of recreation/leisure opportunities in the community. The recipient could be a community or an area within a municipality that has demonstrated creativity in initiating new projects that will lead to healthier futures in promoting, ensuring or advancing active lifestyles.
The Honorary Life Membership Award
The highest award presented by Recreation Nova Scotia as its honours individuals who have made a significant contribution for over 20 years to parks and recreation in Nova Scotia. The nominee will have promoted the values and benefits of parks and recreation through services in the parks, recreation/leisure area; contributed to Recreation Nova Scotia and other similar organizations; and shown outstanding contributions above the ordinary.
Professional Achievement Award
Presented to the individuals and groups of professionals employed in the parks, recreation and/ or leisure field. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the growth and development of the profession. The contribution will have enhanced the public impact of the field locally, provincially and/or nationally. The focus of the award is in the promotion of the values and benefits of recreation/leisure incorporating volunteerism and inclusion as well as a commitment to the field.
Facility Excellence Award
Recognizes contribution of improvements and access provisions of a universal nature to facilities/environments. The recipient will have:
Award Submission Requirements:
All submissions must include the following information:
- Complete nominations form, signed by two nominators who are current members of RNS.
- A written statement of approximately 500 words describing the nominee's contribution and how it reflects selection criteria.
- 2 letters of support.
- Testimonials, newspaper clippings, CD-ROMs, videos and photographs will enhance the submission
- Faxed copies with the nominator's signatures will be accepted
- Submissions are sent directly to Recreation Nova Scotia office. Extended Deadline is September 24th, 2010

Preparation of a submission
The RNS Awards and Recognition Committee are available to provide consultation to nominators preparing a submission.
Review
Nominations are reviewed for completeness. Only complete packages will be forwarded to the RNS Awards and Recognition Committee, who carefully reviews and determines the award recipient(s) for each special award. A weighing scale and selection criteria is used in the review process. Successful nominees will be notified and arrangements for presentation of the award will be made at the Annual RNS Awards Ceremony.

- All applicants must be member in good standing with Recreation Nova Scotia.
- There is a student category, and a non-student category (professionals and volunteers)
- All applicants must be either a member in good standing with Recreation Nova Scotia and resides in Nova Scotia, or an immediate family member of a member in good standing.
- There is a student category, and a non-student category (professionals and volunteers). Note: Group, business and municipal members cannot transfer bursary eligibility to any member of their group/business/municipality, who is not registered as the official/designated member(s) with RNS.
- A detailed outline of the proposed program/ area of study he/she wishes to pursue.
- Information on the expected impact of the program on themselves and others, and how the program/ area of study supports the mission and vision of Recreation Nova Scotia.
- Financial and logistical information including: length of program/ area of study, dates, location, itinerary (if applicable), costs associated with program/ area of study, and all other sources of financial support.
- The application must indicate how he/she will provide feedback to the field, plan to use the knowledge and skills gained and support Recreation Nova Scotia (i.e.: conference session, newsletter article, workshop).
James Bayer Bursary
Aim
To provide members of Recreation Nova Scotia with financial assistance for academic and development opportunities, related to the field of recreation.
To provide family members of Recreation Nova Scotia's members with financial support to pursue academic opportunities (in the field of recreation)
Value
Each bursary is valued up to a maximum of $1000 per year. A maximum of $2500 will be distributed through the program in any one fiscal year. The actual amount awarded will be based on the review and recommendation of the James Bayer Bursary Committee.
Eligibility
Category 1: Professional Development Bursary
Category 2: Academic Bursary
Acceptable Programs
Category 1: Professional Development Bursary opportunities: All training programs, practical research projects, seminars, non-traditional conferences and study tours will be acceptable
Category 2: Academic Bursary: Registering in a recognized University or College degree or diploma program, related to the field of recreation.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
There could be two allocation periods in any one fiscal year. The first allocation period will be in June. If the maximum of $2500 is not distributed at that time, there will be a second review and allocation period in January. The RNS Bursary Committee oversees the selection process. Applicants will receive written notification of the decision within three weeks of the application deadline.
The recipient(s) will be announced and presented at the Annual Recreation Nova Scotia Golf Tournament and further recognition given through the RNS newsletter and AGM.
Recipients are required to submit a report to Recreation Nova Scotia within 2 months of participation in the program or studies. Recipients are expected to attend the Recreation Nova Scotia Annual Golf Tournament and Banquet (held each year in support of the James Bayer Bursary).
