Plans for 55+ Games 2017 Have Been Launched

September 13-16, 2017

The Nova Scotia 55+ Games 2017 Lunenburg County committee is pleased to announce that the plans for the 2017 games have been finalised.  Events Lunenburg County was awarded the games in 2015 and put together their committee co-chaired by Robin Scott and Carroll Randall.  That committee has been working very hard for the past two years putting together a great event.

The games have three streams:  passive, mildly active and active.  These sports and activities will be located at 17 different venues throughout Lunenburg County.   The passive games which will be held at the Best Western Plus in Cookville will include 45s, contract and duplicate bridge, cribbage, scrabble, and skip-bo.  The slightly active events include 8-ball pool, bowling, darts, horseshoes, shuffleboard and washer toss.  The active events are 5k and 10k run, badminton, curling, golf, hockey, mountain biking, pickleball, swimming, tennis, track and field and women’s soccer.

One of the unique aspects of this event is that you must be 55 years old or older and that all events are broken down into age groups.  That way you are competing against people your own age.  Participants 70-80 years old will not be pitted against 55 year olds.  If every age group is filled for this event we could be crowning up to 300 provincial champions.  Each winner has the right to represent Nova Scotia at the National Games which will be held in Saint John, NB in August of 2018.

Along with the games, the organizing committee wants you to know that there is plenty to do for spouses and partners as well as the participants.   There will be the Healthy Senior/Active Senior Health Fair on Thursday, an opening ceremony with entertainment Thursday evening, four pop-up coffee shops at the Bridgewater Legion, and a closing banquet on Saturday.  If you would like to join in the events but not compete, you can register as a non-participant and take advantage of all the extras that are taking place.

Fun, Fitness and Friendship is the motto of the games and we will be highlighting this motto throughout the three-day event.  Come on out and meet new friends or reconnect with friends from past games.  The 2017 games will be a great place to be in September.

To register or to check out the games, go to www.2017ns55plusgames.ca, Facebook at ns55+games2017 or call the games office at 902 530-6755.  We hope to see you all there.
