TD Bank Nova Scotia Outdoor Network Summit a Success!

On April 13 & 14th seventy two keen outdoor professionals and enthusiasts gathered at Brigadoon Village to share stories, address barriers and learn skills related to the outdoor sector in Nova Scotia.  Day one started off with some great stories and advice from Keynote Speakers Chris Surrette and Jan LaPierre of A for Adventure.  The day continued on with an update from Recreation Nova Scotia on the work that is being done around the Shared Strategy for Advancing Recreation in Nova Scotia.  For more information on the Shared Strategy click here.

Next was an engaging session on the Parks for All Strategy with guests Ian Smith (Parks NB), George Woodhouse (Parks Canada), Peter Labour (NS Environment), and Heather Kelday (NS Outdoor Network, NS Sea School).  For more information on Parks For All click here.

In response to the sector’s expressed interest in learning more about risk and liability a Q&A was held with guests Meg Cumming, Michael Crowts & Erin Todd.  Between a slightly competitive game of Jeopardy and an open question period, participants were given tips and hints on how to navigate barriers.

Day two was filled with hands on learning opportunities including a Leave No Trace Workshop, facilitation skills, Wilderness First Aid demonstrations, and introduction to Outdoor Council of Canada’s certification program as well as a memorable ‘Raising the mast’ leadership activity put on by the Nova Scotia Sea School.

Participants left the summit feeling energized after networking with like-minded outdoor professionals and learning more about provincial initiatives.
