Taking the Roof off Winter!
Recreation Nova Scotia’s Take the Roof off Winter campaign officially kicks off Saturday and Sunday, January 21 and 22nd at six locations across the province. In keeping with this year’s theme, “Snowshoeing in our Parks and Protected Areas”, Nova Scotians’ are invited to strap on their snowshoes and join in snowshoe hikes and other launch activities taking place amid the breathtaking scenery of Nova Scotia’s national and provincial parks and protected areas.

Snowshoeing in Our Parks and Protected Areas
Launch Events: Saturday January 21st 2012
Join Les Amis du Plein Air in Cheticamp for a snowshoeing adventure – hiking if no snow. Bring your own snowshoes or borrow a pair on site courtesy of Inverness County Recreation. The group will gather at the Salmon Pools trail head and depart at 10:30am. After the snowshoe trek, hot beverages and snacks will be served in a warm shelter at la Rigouèche. .

Join us for a snowshoe trek on the Gully Lake to Nuttby Trail System. This event is suitable for those age 10 years and older. Meeting at the Trail Head on the Kemptown Road, we will break into groups based on experience and fitness levels. You will be able to choose a 2-4 km or 5-6
km trek - distances may vary due to weather conditions. You must supply your own snowshoes. This is a guided hike - you will be asked to sign a waiver and are required to stay with the group. The leader has the authority and discretion to alter routes as conditions require. Dress for the winter conditions and bring water, high energy snacks, and snowshoes. Try out snowshoeing our trails! We will have some adult snowshoe equipment available for use and we will embark on a guided hike for interested parties. This event is geared for adults /older youth. Please note that events will take place from the ski cabin which is a bit of a walk into the park so please come prepared with warm clothing/ footwear and drinking water. Meet on site at 10am; the hike starts at 10:30. There will be presentations and nature interpretation by local naturalists Bernard Forsythe, Ruth Newell (DNR Wildlife Division) and Reg Newell (Acadia University) and hikes
led by IMBA certified trail leaders Ryan Lindh and Michelle Marcinkiewicz. Trivia and prizes to be won! The Wolfville Scouts will be on site demonstrating Quinzhee building techniques. Warm up with hot drinks in an onsite Yurt! Snowshoes available with registration, numbers are limited so book early by emailing alice@nsnt.ca.

Launch Event: Sunday, January 22nd
Join Annapolis County Recreation Services and the WinterACTIVE team for a guided hike at Valleyview Provincial Park. Must pre-register. Snowshoes will be available for those who require them, however you must let us know when you pre-register if you require them. Come be part of an invigorating fun-filled wintry afternoon trekking through our beautiful woods overlooking the beautiful Annapolis Valley floor. There will be some great prizes handed out as well!
