Move More

Move More

Move More is an 8 week recreation program that combines interactive presentations and discussions on health related topics with fun opportunities to sample various local physical activities. It is geared towards adult participants who are not currently active, and provides basic information on how to build physical activity into heir daily life.

Move More is carried out over 8 sessions, each lasting 1-2 hours a week (50% information/guest speaker sessions and 50% physical activity sampling). Topics covered are:

  • Session 1: Introducing Physical Activity into Your Life
  • Session 2: Breaking Down Barriers to Activity
  • Session 3: Activity Myths
  • Session 4: Motivation & More
  • Session 5: Stress
  • Session 6: Activity & Good Health
  • Session 7: Self Esteem
  • Session 8: Discovering Community & Physical Activity Opportunities

The pillar of the program is the fun physical activity sampling that occurs during the weekly sessions. On the first day of the program, the group of participants, with the help of their certified Move More Leader, will decide on the activities they would like to try within their community. In each session, the group will then sample one of these activities. This enables participants to try something new while also learning about the activities that are available in their community!

Here’s a sample of activities from the George Dixon Centre’s Move More program that took place in the HRM in 2006:

  • Session 1: Motivational Speaker & Group agrees to rest of program
  • Session 2: Visit to Aerobics First for “proper foot wear” talk, stretches, local walk
  • Session 3: Yoga at George Dixon
  • Session 4: Water aerobics at Needham pool
  • Session 5: Geocaching at Fort Needham
  • Session 6: Circuit session at Nubody’s Park Lane
  • Session 7: Tai Chi at the Halifax Tai Chi Society
  • Session 8: Canoeing at St. Mary’s Boat Club
  • Session 9 (BONUS): Group wants to get together one last time. “Walk and Talk” led by professor and historian to visit archaeological dig sites in North End Halifax

RNS launches the Move More for Active Aging program!

RNS is pleased to announce the launch of the Move More for Active Aging program! This new supplement to the Move More program specifically targets older adults, and provides them with the knowledge and motivation needed to begin to overcome their barriers to physical activity.

Developed through the support of the Department of Seniors’ Positive Aging Fund, the Move More for Active Aging program includes several important additions to the original Move More materials. These updates include: new course overheads and handouts; training materials; marketing strategies; a database of key resources, and more.

In March, RNS held refresher workshops for Move More Leaders across the province. These training workshops provided a detailed look at the new Active Aging materials, giving our leaders the capacity and energy to offer a Move More workshop for older adults in your community! RNS would like to thank the Nova Scotia Telehealth Network for offering their facilities for these workshops.

If you are interested in learning more about the Move More for Active Aging program, or if you are a Move More Leader and are interested in receiving the new course materials, please contact RNS at 902-425-1128 or info@recreationns.ns.ca.

Important Information for Leaders and Providers!

The NS Department of Health Promotion and Protection is offering grants through its PROVINCIAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY/RECREATION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.

This program is designed to support activities that respond to the goals and priorities of provincial organizations and PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, SPORT & RECREATION (PASR) priority areas including: reaching inactive populations through accessible physical activity and recreation opportunities; building capacity within communities and organizations; supporting volunteer capacity development; encouraging fair and safe activities; and responding to underserved populations. Priority populations include adolescents/youth, older adults and their families.

This funding could potentially be used to cover registration costs to train Move More leaders in your community, or to assist with costs associated with running a Move More program.
