Conference Sessions - Overview

Delegates will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of timely and important topics, including:

Planning for Active Transportation: - participants will learn the how to's of AT from planning and acquiring funding to implementation and evaluation

Building an Intergenerational Team: - this session will explore the ways and means by which the assets of all four generations can best be mobilized in a workplace setting.

Benefits Beyond Physical Health: The role of recreation in facilitating positive mental health for persons of various ages and at all life stages will be examined. This session will discuss both the philosophy and practice of how recreation serves to address and prevent mental health challenges.

Welcoming Communities: A diverse panel will share their recreation experiences and provide insight into what the recreation profession can do to make Nova Scotia Canada's recreation playground.

Wellness and Wellbeing: In light of recent research that shows a decline in the well-being of Canadians, this session will examine the five dimensions of personal wellness (physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual)and explore the connection between recreation, wellness, and wellbeing.

The Power and the Potential - ARPA Benefits Databank/Portal:This session will introduce participants to ARPA's recently launched benefits databank and portal - a living resource that summarizes evidence that recreaton and parks services really do make a difference. The databank provides an invaluable resource for policy development, planning, marketing, program/service development and/or evaluation.

Understanding the Public Health Agenda: What is the role of recreation in promoting public health? Representatives from public health and recreation will discuss their respective approaches to addressing pressing societal issues such as physical inactivity, healthy eating and mental health through the lens of the determinants of health.

The Power of Policy:Debate will focus on the advantages and drawbacks of consciousness raising vs policy development approaches to bringing about desired change. Kim Kennedy will introduce a set of tools/guidelines to help shape policy and discuss the appropriateness of each. The development process of a Recreation Policy for Nova Scotia will be discussed.

Value of Play:This sessions includes a viewing of the documentary on the value of play followed by a facilitated discussion on the role of play in society, the impact of play, what has happened to the concept of play and the role of the recreation profession in promoting and facilitating play.

Connecting through Social Media: A representative from Voluntary Planning will give a presentation on the various forms of social media (twitter, facebook, myspace, etc.). A panel of representatives from the recreation field will describe how they made effective use of specific social media applications. The sesssion will also explore the potential negative impacts that can result from misuse of this technology.

Recreation Nova Scotia Research Forum

The Research forum is an opportunity for those involved in conducting research on recreation in Nova Scotia to share their work and findings. Presenters will have 15 minutes to give an overview of their results, stressing the practical applications for recreation service providers. A fifteen minute Q&A and discussion period will follow. Session participants will learn, first hand, about some of the exciting, cutting edge research projects going on within the province or that hold relevance for service providers within the province. Confirmed presenters and topics will be available in the conference registration package and in on-site program booklet.
