(Sydney, Cape Breton) – The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is kicking off its Active Transportation Summer campaign “What Moves You, Cape Breton”. The campaign, which starts today, will run until mid-October. Throughout the summer the campaign will be profiling residents of CBRM who use walking as a means of transportation.

“This is an important initiative for CBRM. There are many benefits to using sustainable transportation such as helping the environment and promoting positive physical and mental health,” said Mayor Cecil Clark. “We believe this campaign will show CBRM residents that sustainable transportation can be a regular part of their routines.”

The campaign will focus on walking to encourage residents to use the more than 365 kilometres of sidewalk in CBRM, as well as the many scenic walking paths throughout the Municipality.

“There is a lot of great walking infrastructure in the CBRM,” said Rick McCready, Senior Planner at CBRM. “What we want folks to know is how much infrastructure we have- 80 per cent of residents live near a sidewalk and 25 per cent of residents could walk to work in less then 25 minutes.”

Residents who walk as means of transportation are encouraged to share their story by posting on the Facebook page or sending a message via Facebook.
